The Hairy Nation

Bloomfield, the county seat of Davis County, is nestled in the beautiful southeastern hills of Iowa. Located along the Missouri border, Davis County is a main thoroughfare for travelers and an easy, yet scenic, commute to Des Moines, Iowa City or Kansas City.

Davis County is rich in history and culture, home to one of Iowa's largest Amish communities, abundant with fish, wildlife and recreational opportunities. The nickname, The Hairy Nation, was established in the 1800's as noted in 1883 book "The Rise And Progress of Civilization in the Hairy Nation" by Henry C. Ethell.
